The "capitalism" so beloved by American Conservatives is really private industry subsidized with government money. Even the social welfare programs, let's take food stamps, simply funds corporate farming. Housing programs subsidize private industry contractors and bankers. And those are the social programs.
We've seen what happens to the mega-banking industry and government money, no more capitalist than the former USSR. Bonuses, huge bonuses, of public money paid to those who lost billions and billions of dollars. Not even communism did that.
It's impossible to find a "pure" economy. China is whatever gets the job done at the moment, and has enough central control to fund anything they should choose, be it Mars, the best fighter in the world, or a high-tech or low-tech war. They, unlike the US, have the manpower to wage people intensive conflicts and those are the ones that win these days.
