A bit of a follow-up on Raoul's post.
Orion. The name of the project that was working on nuclear fission bomb propulsion.... Now, Greek mythologies are hard pressed to provide enough names for the space program, and overlap is understandable. But then look at the patch according to CollectSpace and SpaceRef....
Notice how the trajectory sash traverses the three bright stars. Ostensibly, these are the belt stars of Orion, but then again.... Project Orion was attempting to propel spacecraft by periodic nuclear detonations to the aft of a properly shielded craft.
Some ideas I had on this "coincedence" are either this patch was designed to appeal to the old-school rocket man director of NASA, or the patch is designed to be consistent with a later version of the CEV that uses PO type detonations for interplanetary transit.
Surely others must have had ideas on this...
Ok, so the CEV is now named Orion.
