If you'd look around, you'd see that this is less about the scientific community than it is about the media and political agendas that are picking and choosing science to serve their own ends. Note that it isn't so much the scientists who exile dissidents to the outer reaches of "industrial hack" as it is the newspapers and pundits.
Of course, when science is government-funded, then it starts getting more interesting.
