There is no good answer, there is no "winning". If the D's don't have a good answer, it's because there is no good answer. Bush got us into a quagmire from which there is no easy exit, and the American people and Iraqi people are suffering for it.
One thing is certain, though. Bush and the conservatives have totally run the show, getting everything for which they asked, and have still botched it completely. They cannot blame anyone else and stay within the bounds of reality.
