re: Another rare double sun seen briefly

Dear Eric,
We were sitting with our (now) 8 year old son having dinner this evening and asking him about school. He said he told the others about our "double sun" sighting to which everyone had said "rubbish".

This is what we experienced.

It was about 7 years ago, probably during the autumn 1999. I am Danish, my wife is from Fiji and we spent some days on the Eastern coast of Funen in Denmark, near the town of Kerteminde. It was a very beautiful day, bright and sunny, not a cloud in the sky. Driving through a forest, we decided to take a walk, parked the car, got the buggie out for our son and started walking into the forest. It was a fir forest of the commercial type and not the old virgin type, but the aftenoon was just lovely anyway. Having walked for a couple of minutes only, and this must have been direction West as the sun appeared in front of us, we came to a clearing where some logging had taken place. As we entered the open space, the sun shone brightly down on us, but .... there were two suns! I saw your pictures of the setting sun partly clouded, but this was way above the tree tops at the other end of the clearing, not a single clould in sight - there was nothing else in the sky than the sun, or to be correct two suns! I had never seen or even heard of something like this, but there is was right in front of us. It didn't flicker or come and go, or anything like that. It just stood there in the afternoon sky, bright, clear, unobscured by anything - and clearly double. Not so close you had a doubt whether it was one or ... maybe ... two. Two distinct suns! We had been staring at it (as much as you can) for a couple of minutes. It didn't go away, blinking your eyes didn't make it disappear either. As we were not far from the car where I had my camera, I decided to run back, get the camera and come back to take some pictures (35 mm). A couple of minutes later I was back, yes, the sun (suns) were still there and I took some (I don't remember how many) pictures pointing the camera directly into the sun. Great, I was sure I had it covered and after more time there with no sign of the sun/s disappearing, we just continued our walk, returned to the car and drove back home.

Some hours later back in Copenhagen we told our hosts about it and the lady, who is a librarian at the Danish Parliament, told us that it was a "bi-sun" and she knew about such sightings. I had never in my 49 years heard or seen something like that, but here was someone that confirmed it was a known "fact".

We had the pictures developed and much to my surprise and disappointment there were a series of pictures from the clearing in the forest of a single sun, not a double-sun. Every single picture was the same! Not a shade, flicker or any indication of two suns and we had been observing the suns for 10 minutes or so before walking into the forest again and loosing sight of this unusual vision. I completely fail to understand why the pictures didn't show anything at all, absolutely nothing! I think I will try to find them again and take another look, even check the negatives for clues.

So in a way we got a much clearer and longer sight of the phenomenon than what you may have if judging from your pictures, but sadly - absolutely no "proof" to show others. We ourselves don't need more proof, because we clearly remember what we saw. The memory is as clear and bright as autumn sun that pulled this little stunt on us!

If I do find the pix I will send them.

Best regards,
Jens, Shahida & Niels
