A disturbing and compelling piece of testimony, even though it is not completely convincing, it is plausible. All governments disavow responsibility for certain embarassing covert missions, and often agents are told ahead of time that they can expect no acknowledgement if captured. I wonder if this is not the rationale that was applied in this case to uniformed servicemen, and if they were cautioned so ahead of time...My immediate instinct is that this is exactly the kind of treachery Reagan was capable of, but to be fair, I'm sure many Presidents of every political stripe have had to sacrifice volunteers on this type of mission. The question is, are these abandonments of heroes done to protect national security, or political reputations.
