Someone has almost made a tricorder - MRI can now be done with just permanent magnets...
Laser-driven MRI scanner promises portability
...though the prototype is desktop scale the researchers see no problems making it smaller and smaller, even down to "lab on a chip" scale. This is an incredible advance, and it makes things like MRI helmets for brain research feasible. And, of course, a hand-held nuclear resonance sensor much like a "Star Trek" tricorder. Imagine an MER armed with one of these things!
