--President Theodore Roosevelt's reply to criticism of his oldest daughter's behavior.
“My wife is 6-foot-3 and weighs 300 pounds. If there is somebody that thinks they can control her, have at it. I have tried for 11 years and haven’t been able to.â€
--Sheriff Tod Ozmun's reply to public criticism of his wife Doris's behavior.
My my my.... Sheriff Ozmun is in good company.
Alice was arrested several times for speeding (she drove one of the few cars in DC at the time, [gasp...] unchaperoned), had the audacity to smoke and wear make-up in public, and as a comment on the feather boa craze wore her pet, a real boa constrictor, around her neck to social occasions. In her seventies, she took to carrying a real Spanish switchblade, which a friend had smuggled in from Spain, in her voluminous purse. Now she was a force of nature.
Seems to me that, compared to Alice, Doris is merely an exhibitionist (though with much to exhibit), poor thing. The former mayor, who protested 300 lbs. of illustrated woman on display, has mistaken bad taste for morality.
I am a junior member of The Roosevelts, short for The Alice Roosevelt Longworth Supping and Bitching Society. (Motto: "If you can't say something good about someone, sit right here by me." ~Our Namesake) While I doubt anyone will want to join the Doris Ozmun Tattooing and Flag-Draping Society, it's a shame she took down the photos. The other Roosevelts would have gotten a kick out of them.

"I can govern the country or I can control Alice. I can't do both."
