re: WOW

Ya took the words right out of my mouth. But I have more: WOW!

I'm starting to understand what Nick meant about this being an optimum resolution for understanding what we're seeing. The buried crater leaps out at you, almost as if it were a textbook illustration of the concept, perfect little dunes and all. And the whole Victoria Crater image...WOW! again.

I know that my eye can be led astray by terrestrial perceptions, but that image tempts me to imagine that I understand what I'm seeing. And we have a rover on the ground to make in situ observations! This must be a dream come true for geologists, you have your context and closeups and on-the-spot physical measurements. It's as if, perhaps for the first time in exploring Mars, there's enough information available to actually nail down what's going on. I know it's no accident, that this is why we have the architecture of orbiters and landers that we do, and it seems that the strategy is beginning to come to fruition. I look forward to this sort of coordinated orbital/surface operation becoming routine. What a gas that'll be!

I tell myself that nothing can surprise me anymore, but I love the way Mars (and JPL) keep making a liar out of me.
