Very good post, ER.
I'd say there are threats no army can crush and terrorism is one of them. When the army is used anyway, it makes the threat even worse.
Even sophisticated technology doesn't work.
I can't imagine americans would allow to let themselves dragged into an unwinnable and ever lasting war. Terrorism exists because they know very well they cannot win a war the way the US (and Israel too, in the middle-east) intend to wage it. So they change the "rules". But that also means for the attacked countries to change them too.
Israel has been at war for so long. There have been calmer times and stressful ones and there is still a conflict going on (and humiliation).
It means either sides have gotten accomodated to the situation or one side believes it will always get help from its big ally anyway.
To make peace, both sides will have to make concessions and to both sides, the end of the conflict must look like a victory. It has worked in the past (elsewhere) and it will work again.
But terrorists don't always represent a country (and therefore a dialogue is not always possible) and that also means it's a police and criminal investigation matter. Not an army matter.
The UK won't bomb Manchester because terrorists came from there.
Waging "war against terrorism" is couterproductive.
I hope americans realize it soon enough.
