I'm definitely with Tom on this one, ie. auto notification yes, auto install no. I'd guess the vast majority of MS updates are fine, but I once OK'd an audio driver update from MS that completely disabled my audio card. Took forever to straighten that out.

I try to never miss a security update, of course, but I carefully consider the optional ones before taking the plunge.
