Belief in a supreme being is not being conceited and arrogant, it is a recognition that consciousness plays a role in the cosmos. What I reject is the thought that the cosmos was created for our benefit, that we are the only reason everything else is here. The fact that we are conscious, the attribute we give to god, argues that perhaps consciousness does indeed play a role in the universe. We spend so much effort looking for a diety and we don't realize each one of us carries one with him in his own skull. We may lack the super-powers, but we already have the most important part down pat.

Consciousness and self-awareness is something the mathematicians and the physicists can't really help us with, but everyone is already an expert on. It is the single most remarkable and unexpected thing I know about the universe: it is inhabited by thinking creatures.
