Global warming (fiction)

It is hot. The sun is sweltering and my solar watch reads 127 degrees. That’s better than yesterday but at 2am, I had hoped it would get down to 119 or so for some relief. Susan has on a halter top and short shorts. Yes, she looks hot. The sweat glistens of her well shaped legs. And reminds me of a time a little over 15 years ago, before we were married, when we had first moved to the desert and we still thought Arizona would be like a warmer California. It was March and about 80 degrees outside. We had gone for a walk in the early afternoon, she was wearing similar shorts, and we both learned for the first time that the desert sun can sting, regardless of the temperature. Now that the planet’s slowly burning up due to global warming, everyone knows the sting of the sun from Sweden to the Falkland Islands.

I tried to dissuade folks back in the early part of the 21st century, and they would listen. I mocked folks and said computer global warming models were unreliable and based on incomplete data. Now 4/5ths of the populated world have daily temperatures that reach a high of over 120 degrees every day. The deserts now reach 140 degrees and folks have abandoned them for cooler places. Like giant ghost towns, marauders have taken the towns over and there is lawlessness as if it were 1845 again. Some scavengers make night runs when it gets down to 120 or less and try to harvest anything of value or find food.

The crops all died the first few years when the temperature spike hit in 2010. Citrus crops, grain, vegetables - all were decimated by the radiation surge that accompanied the global warming. When I worked for NASA I used to teach folks what high energy wavelengths from the sun break up oxygen and nitrogen creating the ozone layer, so I know only too well what manmade CO2 did to destroy earth’s protection from the worst of the solar radiation and creating a runaway greenhouse effect.

Here we are in 2017 and the world’s already fallen apart. 7/8ths of the planet is starving. Farmlands have turned to dustbowls all over the world. People kill each other for scraps of food. The world economy is shot to hell, there are no restaurants or fast food places any more. Now food is distributed by the governments and martial law has been enacted since the chain reaction of rioting that started in the summer of 2013. No one has an exact count but it’s estimated that the planet’s population has already dropped from 7 billion to 5 billion, with an attrition rate of several hundred million each year.

Many of my colleagues have succumbed to heat related illnesses. The power generators work only sporadically and can never meet the demand of the air conditioners that keep those lucky folks homes a survivable 95 degrees. The governments were caught unaware and unprepared. In Europe where even hospitals had no air conditioning, millions died in the summer of 2011. Young, old, infirm - the temperatures influenced all groups and left a grieving Europe in shock and chaos. Folks were breaking down doors to get into an apartment with a room air conditioner for some relief. The governments had nothing. Mass exodus to Sweden and Russia commenced almost immediately. Now Siberia is one of the nicest spots on the planet with a balmy 85 degree temperature. New cities have emerged as the old ones have been abandoned.

I still have my SUV, I converted it to solar power after harvesting two electric motors from two 2010 model year Tesla mini-vans. The entire roof is covered in solar cells and the air conditioning is hand made with a double compressor set up and has been reconverted to freon with an even larger accumulator and greater capacity. It’s colder in the car than my home now. I can get the car down to 80 degrees at nighttime if I keep the motor humming. Susan and I often sleep in the car now with the doors locked and the sunroof slightly cracked open for fresh air.

Hillary did nothing in the way of averting the crisis. Some say she was quick to declare martial law and was using the riots as a power grab. Indeed, we’ve had no elections since 2008 and the government is just a huge policing and food distribution network now. Susan and I are making a run for the northern parts of Canada, in the Yukon territory near Whitehorse. Canada tried to lockdown the borders but this Suburban is bulletproof and we’ll make a run for the border at nighttime, offroad.

Buck, ET, Pwokenyaw, Robert etcetera, if you can hear me…if you’re still alive out there…I’m sorry. I'm SO sorry!!!! I was wrong. God save us all now. If any of you Hz-ers hear this message…I’m keeping my shortwave receiver open on a 11.6 mhz frequency, it would be great to chat like old times before the internet shut down a few years back…

SDAI-Tech1 over…not out.
