re: You are right about the

closeness of the moon and the Earth and tidal forces having a greater effect on our planet.

Is there any evidence that such condition in the past has caused similar earthquake intensity/activity increase?

When the moon recedes from the closeness to the Earth then the earthquake intensity/activity should fall to the previous levels of mostly magnitude 4 or so.
If the intensity/frequency levels of the earthquakes do not fall significantly, or to the "previous" levels, then there may be another physics phenomenon that aggravates the situation.

Some time ago I postulated an idea (my "hypothesis") that there may be a scientifically demonstrable link between the total atmospheric pressure on the planet and the frequency/intensity of earthquakes.

To over simplify the idea, we could consider the Earth as an egg that has some bubbles of gas within its shell.
What happens to an egg if you place it into a vacuum, I have not done this experiment nor seen it being done, but I suspect that the gas pressure inside the shell will place a greater stress on the shell, perhaps even shattering it.

On a similar note, IF the Earth's atmosphere were to decrease in pressure on a global scale, then the pressures that are inside the Earth in the form of gas bubbles will exert more stress on the surface. Such increase in the pressure difference then could manifest itself in more Earthquakes and perhaps volcanic activity.

What lead to the above "hypothesis" is the fact that a slight amount of atmosphere IS disappearing into space from the upper atmosphere as indicated by this NASA web site.

Then there are other indications that mankind has increased the kinetic energy of the upper atmosphere by exploding nuclear devices up there.

From: here.

Beginning in 1958, the United States had exploded a series of low-yield nuclear devices at high altitudes, but the scale and scope of nuclear testing in space escalated dramatically in the summer of 1962, leading to unforeseen consequences. The United States detonated a high-yield (1.4 megaton) nuclear device, code-named "Starfish," on July 9 above Johnston Island west of Hawaii at an altitude of 400 kilometers.

And from here.
Fission Products
Each fission produces approximately 200 MeV in the form of gamma radiation and the kinetic energy of two fission fragments that are produced. This energy is dissipated in the fuel material as the fission fragments interact with surrounding atoms and slow down.

Not only has there been nuclear explosions in the lower and upper atmosphere, but there has also been many so called "leaks" from nuclear power stations and other mismanaged nuclear programs, such as: this one.

1986
After almost 40 years of cover-ups, the U.S. Government released 19,000 pages of previously classified documents which revealed that the Hanford Engineer Works was responsible for the release of significant amounts of radioactive materials into the atmosphere and the adjacent Columbia River. Between 1944 and 1966, the eight reactors, a source of plutonium production for atomic weapons, discharged billions of gallons of liquids and billions of cubic meters of gases containing plutonium and other radioactive contaminants into the Columbia River, and the soil and air of the Columbia Basin.

I suspect that this energy when added to the energy from the sun has increased the kinetic energy of the atmospheric molecules and that "increase" is the cause of most of the atmospheric problems we are noticing these days.

Unfortunately I am not in a position to prove that this is what is happening.
Without the measurements this "hypothesis" can not be considered anything more than speculation.

Hmm..... lets see, each fission produces approximately 200 MeV, there were billions of gallons of liquids and billions of cubic meters of gases, and more than 1.4 megatons of explosions in the upper atmosphere.

Now if I only knew how many "fissions" there were in these events then I could at least say how much energy was released by these events alone, then I could try and find out how many other "events" have occurred, Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, etc.

On the other hand, perhaps these "billions" and "billions" of released electron volt energies can not do anything, at least that is what I have been told by some people.

Will the possibility of such a thing happening go away if we ignore it?

I think that IF such a phenomenon is in the process of "happening" right now, then "ignoring" it will not make it go away.

I think that the radioactivity levels in the atmosphere should be measured and the kinetic energy levels (heat) energy of the atmosphere compared to the radioactivity levels. (It may be a complex procedure since the sun's energy would be mixed with the "extra" energy being measured.)

Such comparison would then indicate if, or how much, the radioactivity in the atmosphere increases the kinetic energy of the air molecules, also the information could be used to indicate if, or how likely it would be for such effect to increase the kinetic energy of the molecules in the thermo/ion sphere to escape velocity.

There is more to it, but that seems to be the gist of the idea.
