With a loss in cabin pressure,
alarms go off, air hisses noisily out the cabin, people's ears pop painfully, the masks drop, and the crew has a well rehearsed drill they immediately go into. The passengers might panic and pass out, but the crew would be able to keep the aircraft under control, especially the flight deck crew.
Even a gradual drop in cabin pressure would still set off alarms.
