Scientist sometimes seem to be a little premature with big announcements. The biggest effect of the announcement often seems to just set off bitter opposition and denial.
It is still good, I suppose, since the dissension creates more research.
Either way, if it is proof/confirmation of gravity waves at the time of the BB, this seems to be science for science's sake and while it will be fascinating for some of us and immensely rewarding for Astro-Physics, it will have very little impact on the world, in the short term.
Lay persons like me dream of first contact, warp drive, or other announcements that will change humanity. I have come to understand that the things I dream of, will only come at the end of many "baby steps", maybe this is one of those steps, probably nothing more.
