Impressive

It's fascinating how the attempts at 3D visualization of The Face have evolved over the years. That's an impressive rendering, and given that it's based on high-resolution stereo pairs, it has to be very accurate and definitive.

The first attempts were based on a technique called "shape from shading", which uses a single image and infers shape from the pattern of shadows. Here's one of the better attempts, based on the Viking image that started it all:

Martian Enigmas

There were also SfS renderings of MOC images, and with each jump in resolution, The Face looked less face-like.

We've come a long way, baby!
