Very nice. And, - - -

Way, way to soon to tell about recovery.

One of the problems with the stimulants, such as cocaine and methamphetamine, is that they overstimulate the nerve pathways involved with perceiving the world as pleasurable or satisfying. Consequently, there is a long-term or permanent depression built in to their use.

Stimulant addicts not taking the drugs tend to regard the world as two-dimensional, flat, and not much fun. They can laugh at jokes, as opposed to those truly depressed, but because they know the joke is funny, not because they feel it as funny. That low-grade, nothing-is-fun-anymore depression can be relieved with more stimulants. "Everyone deserves a chance to relax once in a while."

Very often the early physical recovery, coupled with the euphoria of getting out of trouble, masks depression. For a while. And after a while life just sort of grinds.

That's why there is such a high rate of relapse.

It can be helped with the judicious use of some of the newer anti-depressants in early recovery, and that isn't often attempted. The depression, as I said, is hidden until too late.

I wish her the best, and it's uphill for a long, long time.
