The True Believers will attempt to blame the Ds for "losing" the war. That is folly.
In reality, the situation has been getting worse, and worse, and worse. The US has lost the hearts and minds. Any insurgency needs the support of the people, and this one does. If the US could win, it would have won. Keep doing what you've been doing, and you'll keep getting what you've got.
Additionally, there is a religious civil war which the government is powerless to stop, and in some instances supports.
There is no talk of devoting the resources to "win". All that's left, following Cheney's statement that the administration has the proper basic strategy, is to see it get even worse for the US.
There can be no honest discussion of anything which happens after the elections of the Ds cutting and running, or losing the war. It's lost.
The only sensible course left is to cut the losses, stop throwing good money after bad, stop pounding sand down a rathole. It is beyond folly to lose more good lives for no reason. Like adults, it's time to back out. Unfortunately, there will be a residual harvest of the hate we have sowed. That's even Biblical. Sow hate, killing, reap hate, killing.
And, the True Believers will try to blame the Ds for "losing". This was lost from Day One by the political decisions which have misused a very good military. But they'll try. I guarantee it. To be a conservative is never having to say I'm sorry, I was wrong, I made a mistake.
