Antiquated, or simple? Or both?
It would seem to me that to keep them reliable in that environment they might keep the programs and CPUs as simple and robust as possible. Mighten they have left out that part of the software just to keep matters uncomplicated?
Would be a shame to have an unnecessary command or software mess things up if it went to hell.
And I really, really don't know what I'm talking about. A simple person's simple conjecture.
