Hi All
Some milestones from the STG report in 1969...
...so Mars by 1981, after a second round of landers and rover in 1978.
...this is the Earth-Moon architecture that would've had a base up and running by 1978. Optimistic, perhaps, but not an insane commitment of resources.
Finally by the late 1980s, early 1990s this is how advanced the STG was hoping things would be...
...with 72 crew each on Mars and the Moon, with a 100 person LEO Space Base, after the 12 man Space Station of the late 1970s. A 12 person mission to Mars would've flown in 1986, followed by the 72 person semi-permanent Base in 1989.
Even more optimistically they hoped to have the fully reusable 2-Stage Space Shuttle flying by 1975 - which was put back to 1981 by 1975, though some hoped for an earlier launch in 1979. Launching at 60 times a year the Shuttle would've cut costs of supplies to the Space Base by 10-fold, but without a Space Base there was nowhere to go 60 times a year. The Space Base components would've been launched by several heavy-duty Saturn Vs by c. 1981.
Which segues into this cool pic...
...which is how the ISS could've been launched if anyone had kept HLLV production going in the late 1990s.
