there is some evidence Burton was quite a rake and a libertine, certainly by the Victorian standards he was bound to be judged by. But he was also a remarkable scholar, with a gift for picking up languages, both modern and ancient, on the fly, and feeling at ease in any culture he happened to be in. His published works on ethnography are till being mined for information.
But it is said his wife burned all his unpublished notes and manuscripts after his death because she felt they were "too wicked" to be read by the public.
