I don't trust polished crystals

I have one, a nice clear quartz. It throws an interesting double prism in the sunlight. The angles are correct, but I really don't know if it really grew that way or not. I like the unpolished crystals. The little ridges along the face show how the crystal grew over time; polishing them off removes an element of the crystal's personality.

Color in minerals is a complex topic. Natural crystals can be dyed. Amethyst can be irradiated to make it darker blue. Smokey quartz can be heated to make it clear. I'll be honest, this is the first I've heard of "cherry quartz". I've seen very dark rose quartz but never something that red. I'd have to look into it more, but I have my doubts that it is natural. Seeing it in outcrop would suspend all doubt.

I tend to only go to mineral shows that are at geologic conferences. And I think you know that I don't believe in the mystical power of crystals, other than what we give them. The fascinate me in a whole different way.

I hope you've seen the mineral museum in Ashville, it's pretty nice. There's another one over in Spruce Pine along the Parkway. Also, the visitor center up on Mount Mitchell has a really nice geologic history display.
