Is this a philosophical, scientific, or politic question?
I can answer all three..
Philosophical:-
There might be liquid water in the subsurface of Mars and it could reach the surface, even today. This would be of fundamental importance to the way we view the Universe, with a nearby potential wet haven for shallow near-surface life
Scientific:-
The chance of liquid water in the shallow subsurface is remote, in any rational and objective view
Political:-
Water on Mars is so important that rationality is not important. Especially if you have vested interests.
I'll be at LPSC 2007, arguing my case against liquid water. See you there, Jim?
