Space/Science » in reply to MARSIS from Mars Express

This is not new, of course

Herb Frey has been doing very good work for about 5 years now, using MOLA to map buried craters in the Northern plains. This has ben tied-in by Gerhard Neukum and Bill Hartmann with crater-age distributions to date the "basement" of the Northern plains as older than the exposed surface of the southern highlands (but there's no paradox here, because the southern highlands ALSO has a buried large crater population that makes it even older still).

This is ESA trying to make a small triumph out of a huge failure - the failure to find ANY sign of liquid water ANYWHERE on Mars. That was, after all, the principal mission of Marsis.

What we have left is some interesting depth sounding of the upper crust/deep regolith of Mars and of the polar caps.

Oh, and a step towards White Mars...
