Three ships loaded with over 100 English settlers
set sail from English waters on December/20/1606.
Their destination?...The English colony of Virginia.
By the end of May 1607 the first settlement at
Jamestown was established.
By the end of that year, famine and disease reduced
the total number of settlers to just over 40.
If that settlement had failed?...You Americans
might be speaking French or Spanish today.
