Ageing and evolution
I can imagine an organism that is immortal - ie with perfectly reliable DNA protection and repair mechanisms - but such an organism (or population of organisms) couldn't evolve. Therefore it would seem that ageing itself is an evolved mechanism to ensure further evolution can take place.
