Intuitively. Common-sensically. Using reason and logic.
Unless this is a negative image, the illumination is coming from the right at about 3:00PM. If north is up, that would be the east.
The eastern edges of the pockmarks (small craters)are in shadow, the western sides illuminated as the sun rises. The diagonal hill is casting a shadow to the west, the steep eastern slope brightly illumninated from the sun on the right.
I realize there are august personages who see something else, I will rely on more experienced photo interpreters for the bottom line. However, if I were asked what I saw, it would have to be a hill, Sun on right, shadows on left, as Gawd intended when He Created Earth some 6,000 years ago. I just can't tease anything else out which will allow for photons to travel in a straight line from their source.
