Science fiction highlights what we fear about the future.
All the best sci-fi stories are about some speculative technology-made-boogeyman and how it's going to destroy our lives. The fact is most of these technologies don't exist and may not even be possible. Most technologies are highly specialized, and can only do one thing. Even if they are possible, they may instead be beneficial. Consider the possibiity that The Borg from Star Trek might be the good guys, that their technologies are genuinely a step forward in the right direction.
There is nothing to fear but fear itself.... And monsters. lol.
