re: the consensus?
So far, the only people obsessed with a U.S. strike on Iran are leftist conspiracy nuts. If you recall, they were convinced that Bush would attack Iran as part of an "October Surprise."
However, I think we are being treated to a textbook case of how well diplomacy and the United Nations work in dealing with something like this.
