Mind you, at that point France was used to mergers, and we'd recently rebuffed a more hostile takeover bid from our Saxon brothers.
We've never quite forgiven the French for William the Conqueror (note: not French) and they've never quite gotten over Agincourt or Waterloo.
We did kinda own most of it for a while and they're still missing their royals, so maybe joining the Commonwealth might not have been such a bad idea. At least their athletes are pretty crap, unlike those bloody Kenyans.....
