Some ways.

Real soon, of course, the Undo button.

Later, if the program was closed and the file wasn't, it will be recovered.

If the file was closed and thrown out, check the recycle bin. That's what it's for.

And last, run a search on the web. I had to do that once, and some smart folks knew how to search the hard drive for deleted files which have had their first letter of the file name replaced with a character which means "it's ok to overwrite this file". If it hasn't been overwritten it's recoverable. Searching for the file with the proper name will work. Has worked.

Sometimes, too, the file name with * for the first letter will do the same thing. Be sure to search all areas of the disk.

I don't remember what characters those are, but someone will.

And if it's something you really, really need, it's gone. A thank you letter to Aunt Matilda will live forever, 3 days work won't.

It's the First Law of the Innate Perversity of Inanimate Objects. "You want it, you can't have it."
