Pretty much a little bit of everything here, isn't there.

One of the greatest effects of the internet on the world is that physical location no longer matters. My cousin's husband is a programmer who works out of his home for a company where everybody works out of there home. They live everywhere and only meet in person a couple of time per year. It gives them the advantage of being able to live anywhere in the world. They lived in Italy for a year, just to try something different.

The technology for sharing on a Wide Array Network still seems a bit immature to me, but I can see that changing rapidly as the demand increases and internet speeds increase.

As far as creating a consultancy of our own, such an idea is fun to think about. The practicality of it might not be as far-fetched as it seems. That client base mentioned in the title may be just a bit too broad for one consultancy though. :) I have been seriously thinking about setting up an internet-based design company for the past 6 months. Why have the overhead of an office? All the work can be done from home, marketed and sold across the internet, then printed and delivered via Fed-Ex Kinkos anywhere in the world locally. Mainly my ideas have been to serve the single-family home market, but there isn't any reason why it couldn't work in other disciplines or markets.

Btw, I'm currently waiting on various government (and pseudo-government) agencies to finish up reviewing the last of my paperwork, so I can finally start my Architecture exams. Hopefully I'll be able to take the first one in April or May. Then (assuming I pass it the first time) only 8 more exams to go.
