Minnesotans are an interesting bunch and very complicated in their political leanings. They seem to embrace people that are a bit outside the box. Franken certainly fits that bill. He also has the main political trait required today - name recognition.
Actually, many of you would be surprised to know that I really don't ever listen to his program on Air America. Even if it did come on during my commute when I really have the time and resources to hang out on the AM dial, I find his humor extremely lacking, too slow, and juvenile. There are some of his politics I agree with but he's a bit too pro-Israel for my tastes.
Air America will do just fine without him and probably even prosper a bit if they can attract a better and more dynamic host.
