This might be a better subject for OT but in the off chance it might be offensive to someone I will post it here.

A mild firestorm has recently erupted in my area regarding a recording of a well known personality repeating an anecdote that included the subject term. Nick's post on PC reminded me of this.

Coon Ass is a term applied to Louisiana natives that are of French Canadian extraction (Cajuns). It is not comparable to the N word in any way and the term is freely used in LA by all. It is not one of those situations like the N word where it is okay to use it among fellow Coon Asses. It is used by everyone. It is very common for Louisiana native to introduce themselves to outsiders as a Coon Ass, sometimes they claim the title even when they are not of French canadian extraction.

The story was about a Cajun that made some comments in his cajun accent regarding a current event and the result was comical and was arguably worthy of repeating as a joke.

The firestorm is all from another State that has reason to dislike the person involved and is getting no play at all among the group that is supposed to be offended. The comments were made off record and were recorded without permission or knowlege of the person involved.

The point of this post is to measure the reaction to the term from this group. Have most of you heard of the term? In your mind is it something that you consider or might have considered as insulting or as an example of bias or racism?
