Yeah, I have similar memories of taking typing in high school. Odd choice for a male at the time, still (circa 1970), and I forget why I signed up. But with hindsight it was one of the most important classes I ever took, the gateway not only to computers but to making a living as a technical writer for a decade or so. And of course typing's the key to babbling on the Zone so verbosely.
I can still smell the whiteout. I used a fair bit of it, since the faster I type the more typos I type. Those Selectrics with the correcting ribbon were a blessing, though near the end of the cartridge the whiteout overtyping got a bit spotty after I'd used so much of it. Thank god for glass typewriters like I'm using now, where I can backspace and hit Del to my heart's content--the bits are free. It's kinda like digital cameras, I guess, in that I can shoot all the pictures I want and throw out the 90% that are crap and it doesn't cost me a thing.
