The setup - "Gates: Troop buildup not last chance for Iraq"

"Defense secretary considers next steps if surge proves unsuccessful."

So the "benchmarks" and other expectations mean exactly what?

If the surge doesn't work and Iraqis can't take over control of the capital of the country, if the Iraqi government doesn't have the support of the majority of the people, what is next?

Clearly, a foreign occupation "protecting" vital interests (oil, for the benefit of the Iraqi people, of course), using permanent bases out in the desert. Extending US military presence in the region. And protecting that embassy in Baghdad and some form of puppet government.

The hell with WMDs, nukes, democracy, stability and the Iraqis. Window-dressing, and always has been.

The US never leaves a country it has invaded unless it is thrown out. Why have troops in Germany still? Japan? To protect against North Korea?
