The hydrogen atom is further polarized after enough time in this enormous magnetic field and as more energy is channeled into it, it evolves into a helium atom, two protons and two electrons. It's not fusion - it's helio-magnetic evolution. And this is why we find hydrogen and helium comprising a large part of our universe - stars create hydrogen and various isotopes of hydrogen until it turns into helium after enough time in the magnetic stew. This is why stars are so stable and why I suspect the time table for a stars' life is completely off the mark - since it is fueled by the galaxy itself.
