An astronomer , Eric Aristidi, had been winterovering at Concordia.
Dome C is at an altitude of 3,233 m in one of the most desolated places on this planet at the South Pole.
There are 100 days of uninterrupted darkness, without any light pollution (except from the base itself) and with almost no clouds, dryer than the Sahara desert.
Ideal for astronomy!!
Not on the ground but about 30 m from the surface, the seeing is like from space. Stars are visible right down to the horizon. 16 persons can live there during the winter.
Eric thought however he could stare at stars with his binoculars....but soon discovered but the chill is such it's very inconvenient because the air is at -60°C and even the tiny space between the eyepiece and the eye is an ordeal.
Besides, to manipulate an eyepiece with thick gloves is not convenient either.
It is an ideal place to train humans under harsh and isolated 9 months long conditions...for Mars.
