Mosquito netting is a must for the region.
It's as though there were two basic breeds of mosquito in Panama, one for evening, and another for morning. Around 1 to 3 AM they're difficult to find, but, yes, when they rise for feeding, you can actually hear the hum.
I tell people that the swarms are so big, they'll just get together and drag you off into the jungle, kicking and screaming, for that late night snack later on.
