What's needed...
is a fluid or vapour layer to lubricate the contact patch, or lift the ski off the abrasive grains. That means backpacks or dragged "trailers" with extra volatiles, sort of like a snail trail on the Moon!
Or alternatively, enough power to overcome the friction, and a thick enough "ski" to allow for abrasion and heat build-up...
