Nuclear Power, a “renaissance”?

By Jeff St. John / The Fresno Bee

Patrick Moore, a co-founder of Greenpeace turned nuclear power advocate, spoke Thursday in Fresno in support of a group that hopes to make Fresno the site of the state's first new nuclear plant in more than 30 years.
"Nuclear energy is the only nongreenhouse gas-emitting energy source that can effectively replace fossil fuels and satisfy global demand," Moore told the audience near the end of an hourlong speech interrupted several times by catcalls from the audience.

Besides that it is safe. I don’t think anybody has been injured from nuclear power plants in Calif.

I’m sure this will be a uphill battle but I’m hoping construction will start before the end of the decade.

Buoyed by billions of dollars in subsidies pushed through Congress by the Bush administration, the U.S. nuclear power industry says 2007 is the year its plans for a “renaissance” will reach critical mass.
“We see a wave,” said Steve Kerekes, a spokesman with the Nuclear Energy Institute, the industry’s chief lobbying arm, pointing to letters of intent by a dozen firms to seek licenses for as many as 31 new nuclear power reactors. “We definitely believe it’s going to be a whole new era of new plant construction in this country.”
