The "in wheel motor" idea is so obvious, and such a good idea, especially in electrics and true hybrids, that I suspect the technology is more difficult to deal with than we think. It does multiply the number of brushes and connections, and puts the electric motors into a more unprotected, wet and dirty area than somewhere inside the car.
