The US has secret prisons. Secret arrests. It's illegal to talk about those arrests, even. The US holds people without charges indefinitely in secret locations, there whereabouts unknown to anyone, including the Red Cross and their families.

Example:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A US federal appeals court on Friday upheld a refusal to hear the case of a Lebanese-born German man who says he was tortured by the CIA, citing national security reasons.
