90% of my automotive time and mileage is spent driving alone back and forth to work at speeds under 40MPH, with just my briefcase as cargo. I could own a V8 SUV for the occasional shopping trip or Home Depot run without it altering my fuel budget all that much. We can have our cake and eat it too, as long as we don't insist on commuting in the same buggy we use to tow the boat.
