Several weeks ago, thanks to a belgian forum for space enthusiasts, I learned the Apollo 14 LMP would give a speech (about Consciousness) at Bruges on saturday march 24th anf that's where I went....
It took place at the Belfry...(one of the rooms).
The space nuts among us recognized Edgar Mitchell immediately...
Other people gave speeches before him, but then came his turn (a selection, 2 movies each 1 minute..).
Then there was an interruption and I managed to talk a little bit with him. He said Shepard claimed the golf ball went miles and miles away , but he (Edgar) took the solar collector support, threw it as a javelin and it went further than the ball!! He showed a picture proving this. I wonder if it's on the web.
In those pictures, he's being interviewed by a local journalist; that was a few seconds after we talked.
I told him he was the first I saw live on TV from the Moon (during Apollo 11 I was away from home), also that we had hours of a static image when they were away from the field trying to reach Cone Crater, which they missed by a few meters.
He also said during his speech he saw stars through a telescope. Then during our conversation, I asked if it wasn't the sextant they used for navigation he talked about. He confirmed (very narrow field of view). He said he could see stars from the side in shadow of the capsule and that lights inside the CM were dim enough not to bother stargazing too much.
He's the second (after Schmitt) of the 9 living legendary moonwalkers I meet! A great moment!
