According to interviews with Ford, Wayne and Campbell, the dialogue for the movie "True Grit," as well as "Rooster Cogburn and the Lady," was supposed to be stilted, because that was the way folks spoke back then, many a lustrum ago.

Definition of LUSTRUM: 1 - a period of five years.
