Commercials don't need to be funny, just sell the product. I enjoy the caveman series because I find the gentle satire on yuppie angst amusing
in a contemporary sort of way. It's a comment on pop culture. And I must admit, this is one of the few artfully done advertising campaigns where I actually remember the product. But I suspect that annoying lizard will sell more insurance than the cave dudes. BTW, I am eagerly awaiting the first appearance of a cave woman.
Can you imagine how difficult it would be to explain the caveman schtick to an intelligent person from another culture, say a foreigner who spoke good English but was not familiar with life in America? This is loaded with specific contemporary cultural references and class markers, and it is aimed at a specific demographic and educational level, even while it pokes fun at it. There is a lot of intelligence here, whether it is good business or not I will leave it to others to decide. But a TV series would be an adveritising triumph for GEICO, even if the product was never mentioned.
