"Note: As of April 2007, Dr. Robert Bussard, stated that due to the publicity from his 11/9/2006 talk at Google and the 2006 Outstanding Technology of the Year Award, the U.S. Navy sent him a contract extension to continue his fusion research. "

No word on whether he has accepted the contract extension. His EMC2 website is still up and running. I just hope they aren't trying to stop him from publishing. Even if they do, his work is still going to be presented at the 2007 International Space Development Conference by Tom Ligon, a volunteer for Bussard. The program for ISDC 2007 is now online and includes nuclear power for space, and nuclear rockets. I don't know why they would want to stop him now. I think if I researched it a bit more, I might be able to reverse-engineer Bussard's reactor just from the photographs.
It has been suggested by Bussard that compact fusion reactors such as he is designing could be incorporated into aircraft. Taking off from a runway, the aircraft would climb to a high altitude and switch to ion propulsion with highly variable thrust and specific impulse to achieve orbital velocity. JP Aerospace is also researching supersonic inflatable airfoils for transatmospheric flight. They call it Airship-to-Orbit (ATO). They just need a power source.
