Wasn't the Cuban missile crisis solved because in exchange, Kennedy accepted to discreetly remove the US missiles from Turkey? (away from the very public immediate issues surroundig Cuba)
This meant that both sides had cards (some public, some secret) to play!
Which means a head of state should always have various plans in case one fails. Meaning, be always ready to talk to the other side.
